With the growing focus and awareness of mental health and well-being, researchers and doctors are constantly on the lookout for new treatments. Depression is one of the most widely experienced conditions, with as of May of 2023, 29% of U.S. adults reporting at least one diagnosis in their lifetime (Witters, 2023).This is why it is crucial to find more treatments for the condition, and what researchers at the University of Cincinnati have been looking to solve.

Romo-Nava, associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at UC, associate chief research officer for the Research Institute at the Lindner Center of HOPE, UC Health physician scientist and principal investigator of this study, stated that his lab believes “the connection between the brain and the body is essential for psychiatric disorders,” which explains the team’s approach to treating depressive symptoms. Though it may not make sense to some, the team has suggested a way to treat depression using spinal cord stimulation. Though this method is yet to be confirmed, this finding is crucial to the future of neuroscience and mental health services. To read about the specifics in the study, click the link below!
