Happy New Year! :)

We all know the term “new year's resolution”. It has been repeated time and time again and is thought of as a tactic to “renew oneself” in the new year. However, 23% of people quit their resolutions within a week, and 43% by the end of January (Batts, 2023). Why is this?

Most who tend to set New Year's goals either set intentions that are unattainable and/or unrealistic, or simply do not take potential obstacles into consideration. When realizing they've taken on too much, most crack under the stress and give up altogether. How can we be sure that this doesn’t happen to you? My solution is… yoga!

Because of the stress that the new year or even just new projects can bring upon us, many tend to drop their new year's resolution fairly quickly. However, if a person were to manage their stress effectively, this becomes less likely. A “stress-relieving” or “self-care” activity does not have to take long, 5 minutes will suffice. Just taking the time to do one simple thing at the start of each day can help us enter our day with a clear and optimistic mind.

Now, I am not going to tell you to roll out your yoga mat, or even to get out of bed. What I will say, though, is that corpse pose will become your new best friend. Yes, I said corpse pose. It sounds odd, but I promise it works. When you wake up each day, lay flat on your back and take five deep breaths. Repeat any sentence to get you motivated at least three times, or until you feel it sink in (one example might be “today is a great day”). While you may think this will not work, it does. It has been proven time and time again that yoga and affirmations help one's mood and mindset, especially when used together.

I hope you all had an incredible 2023. Cheers to 2024!
